What is the difference between "calendar difference" and "total days"?

Calendar difference breaks the gap into years, months, and days the way a calendar would. Total elapsed days is the exact single number of days between the two dates.

What happens if I enter the dates in the wrong order?

How it works

The calculator finds the calendar difference (years, months, days) between your two dates, and separately reports the total elapsed days — two related but distinct figures.

Formula & methodology

Two measures are reported. The calendar difference counts complete years, then months, then days. The total elapsed days is the exact number of days between the two dates. If the end date is earlier than the start date, the order is swapped and the result is flagged.

What each term means

Absolute value (| |): Absolute value, so the result is never negative.
Remainder (mod): The remainder after division (for example 10 mod 7 = 3).

Worked example

From June 1, 2023 to September 13, 2026 is 3 years, 3 months, and 12 days — 1,200 total days.
