How it works

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely regarded as one of the most accurate BMR formulas for the general population, combining your weight, height, age, and sex into a single resting-calorie estimate.

Formula & methodology

Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) + 5. Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) − 161.

Worked example

A 30-year-old woman who is 165 cm tall and weighs 65 kg has an estimated BMR of about 1,370 calories per day.

Important notes

  • BMR assumes complete rest — it does not include calories burned through daily activity or exercise.
  • To find your total daily calorie needs, use the TDEE Calculator, which applies an activity multiplier to your BMR.
