Pace Calculator
Enter a distance and time to calculate your pace per kilometer, pace per mile, and speed — useful for running, walking, or cycling.
Your calculation is performed in your browser. This result is an estimate for informational and educational purposes. It isn’t a diagnosis and isn’t a substitute for advice from a doctor, registered dietitian, or other qualified professional. See our methodology and sources for the formula used and its limitations.
How it works
The calculator divides your total time by the distance covered to find your pace, and separately converts the same distance and time into a speed in kilometers and miles per hour.
Formula & methodology
Time is converted to seconds and distance to kilometres and miles (1 mile = 1.609344 km). Pace is time per unit of distance, and speed is distance per hour, so both units are shown.
Pace = Total time ÷ DistanceSpeed = Distance ÷ (Total time in hours)Miles = Kilometres ÷ 1.609344What each term means
- Total time
- Hours, minutes and seconds combined.
- Pace
- Shown as minutes:seconds per km and per mile.
Worked example
Running 5 km in 25 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per km (about 8:03 per mile) and a speed of roughly 12 km/h (7.5 mph).
Common uses
- —Planning a target pace for an upcoming 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon.
- —Converting a finish-time goal into the per-kilometer or per-mile splits needed to hit it.
- —Comparing training run paces against race-day pace goals.
Important notes
- —Enter distance in either kilometers or miles — the calculator converts and shows results in both units.
- —This works for any steady-pace activity, not just running — walking and cycling splits can be calculated the same way.
